SURF stands for Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Normally SURF students work 40 hours a week in a laboratory at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital or UC’s College of Medicine. However, due to COVID-19 any and all in-person SURF activities were cancelled. Fortunately, Cincinnati Children’s organized a virtual SURF experience. During the weeks SURF was supposed to happen in-person, CCHMC organized activities in the afternoon so SURF applicants could still get some exposure to careers in healthcare. For example, one day we had the opportunity to do a virtual tour of Hoxworth Blood Center. Most days involved speakers who were involved in various careers in STEM. For example, in June there was a very interesting talk on immunology and flow cytometry. Before SURF I was not even familiar with the term flow cytometry. There were also a lot of helpful presentations on professionalism in STEM, such as a talk on how to create a successful Linkedln, how to find mentors, and how to obtain good letters of recommendation. Overall SURF was a very successful experience, and I am grateful that I still had the opportunity to learn about healthcare and research even though COVID-19 prevented an in-person SURF experience. I hope to participate in SURF again next summer (hopefully in-person)!
